Amber Groomes, Ph.D.

I received my Ph.D. in School Psychology from the University of Texas in Austin, and I am a licensed Clinical Psychologist in Maryland. I work with children, adolescents, and young adults to address a wide range of behavioral and emotional concerns, including anxiety, depression, trauma, family or relationship challenges, life transitions, self-harm, and impulsive or self-defeating behaviors. I have trained and worked in schools, community mental health, juvenile detention facilities, residential treatment, and private practice.

I use an integrative, collaborative, and warm therapeutic approach that utilizes techniques from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy, and Family Systems orientations. I am also trained in a number of evidenced-based treatment modalities, including Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Dialectical Behavior Therapy. My approach to treatment has been described as validating, client-driven, and highly practical. I have specialized training in the diagnosis and treatment of youth, with particular expertise in working with adolescents. I am passionate about helping tweens, teens, and emerging adults to navigate the increasingly stressful demands of balancing school, family, friends, and personal wellness. When appropriate, I value collaborating with caregivers, family members, and schools to support child/adolescent treatment. I can also provide parent training to enhance behavior management and address common parenting concerns. If you are a teen or young adult interested in learning skills to manage intense emotions or destructive urges, I can provide DBT-informed treatment. DBT incorporates skills for mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, distress tolerance, and emotional regulation.
